The Wedding Singer
Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts

Image

It is becoming almost de rigeur for Broadway producers to tap into proven storylines as source material for new productions.  Some fail miserably and others are surprising successes.  Into the latter camp surprisingly landed “The Wedding Singer.”  The Adam Sandler / Drew Barrymore film was a surprising success, with a pair of soundtrack albums that suitably encapsulate the frothy sounds of the 80s. On Broadway, the musical production garnered five Tony nominations.

At the comfortably intimate Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts, we will expect big hair as New Jersey’s best wedding reception entertainer tries to sweep his lover out of the arms of a Wall Street suitor.  The original musical numbers draw from the strains of 80s pop/rock, and the sparkle is evident throughout. The theme transcends borders, as productions have been mounted through Europe and Australia. Devotees of the film will pick out certain plot variations, but overall the musical captures the perky spirit of the film.

The Wedding Singer: November 20-22; Tickets: (562) 467-8818 or go to www.cerritoscenter.com.
