Beastly Ball & A Taste of Summer

It was like a scene from “Tarzan meets the Beautiful People” the other evening, when Over 700 safari clad guests trekked through the Los Angeles Zoo in celebration of the 43rd Annual Beastly Ball, that honored Wells Fargo and actress Pauley Perrette, star of CBS’s #1 rated drama NCIS.  Perrette, who is active in scads of charities, including Project Angel Food, and People Assisting the Homeless, succeeds Sarah Michelle Geller and rock star Slash, also animal activists, who were honored by the Zoo.

She created the “Meet the Keepers” video presentation now playing at Elephants in Asia.

Of course, Betty White was on hand at her favorite destination, and among the fab auction items, she offered a backstage tour of the Rainforest of the Americas, followed by a cocktail party among the animals.  Can you think of a better way to spend an evening?

Among the celebrated guests was Betty’s co-star of her hit TV series, Hot in Cleveland, Valerie Bertinelli and her family, who feasted on scrumptious fare donated

from such eateries as Celestino, Green Street Restaurant, Il Fornaio, The Federal Bar, El Coyote and, of course, Pink’s Hot Dogs.  We always dash to the glorious potato bar, where you can decorate your mashed potato sundae with everything from chili to shitake mushrooms.

But the best part was the meet and greet with the inhabitants of the zoo in their own environment.  We even got to see the magnificent black jaguar ingesting his dinner.

We were pleased not to join him!  Kudos to President Connie Morgan and Zoo Director John Lewis and their volunteer corps of over 800 people, who made this a very special evening indeed.

We love the good old summertime, because most of the events we attend are al fresco, and this year we were invited to A Taste of Summer, an exclusive food, wine & beer tasting event, which benefited the Fulfillment Fund.  Not only that, but it was our first visit to the fabulous Annenberg Community Beach House in Santa Monica, and we even got to view the elegant private beach cottage of Marion Davis.

Over 500 exuberant guests enjoyed a sampling of delicious food from Wolfgang Puck Catering, Whole Foods, Silverado Vineyards and Nothing Bundt Cakes — to name a few.

All the proceeds from the event benefit the Fulfillment Fund, which makes college a reality for students in educationally and economically under-resourced communities.

Thanks to Honorary Chair and Celebrity Chef, Eric Greenspan (The Foundry on Melrose), and the myriad of sponsors, the event raised lots of dough-re-me for this most worthwhile non-profit organization.
